Canada Total Fertility Rate
(TFR)
The Canada TFR is 1.6 children per woman. This is below the replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman, meaning that the population of Canada is slowly shrinking. Low fertility rates are common in developed countries, as women are increasingly choosing to delay childbirth until they are older. This trend is also contributing to the population decline in Canada.
There are a number of factors that are contributing to the low fertility rate in Canada. One major reason is the high cost of child care. In most provinces, the cost of full-time daycare is more than the cost of university tuition. This makes it difficult for couples to afford to have children.
Another factor is the lack of parental leave. In Canada, new mothers are only granted a 17-week leave with 55% pay. This is much shorter than the leave periods offered in other developed countries.
