Pregnancy Week 17

Pregnancy Week 17

The 17th week of pregnancy is an exciting milestone. The baby has now reached a size similar to that of a mushroom. Babies can respond to sound and touch, and the mother may be experiencing some physical changes, such as increased energy and greater appetite.

Development

By this stage of pregnancy, fetal development is continuing at a rapid pace. The baby is now about 5 inches (12.7 cm) long and has a crown-to-rump length of 5.8 inches (14.6 cm). The baby weighs in at about 5 ounces (142 grams).

The baby’s features are becoming more and more distinct. The eyes have moved to the front of the head and the eyelids have begun to form. Fingerprints are forming, and the baby’s arms and legs are growing longer. The baby’s taste buds are now developed and the baby can sense sound and touch. The baby is also producing its own white blood cells to fight infections.

Mother’s Health

At 17 weeks, the mother may be feeling more energetic and less fatigued, as her hormones are more balanced. Cravings and aversions to certain foods may still exist, and the mother’s appetite may be increasing as the baby grows.

The mother may also be feeling the baby’s movements more frequently. The baby will move more often, as it is now vigorously exercising its arms and legs inside the womb. The mother may feel a “fluttering” sensation, similar to butterflies in the stomach. Morning sickness and nausea may still be present, although less severe at this stage.
