A blood pregnancy test measures the level of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your blood. hCG is produced by the placenta after the embryo has implanted in the uterus. The level of hCG starts to increase shortly after implantation and doubles every two to three days. So if you have a blood pregnancy test done, your doctor will measure the level of hCG in your blood to see if it’s increasing.
If the level of hCG is increasing, it means that you’re pregnant. If the level of hCG is not increasing, it means that you’re not pregnant.
