Expand Discussion of False Negative Results
False negative results on a pregnancy test generally occur when the test is taken before the missed period or too soon after the missed period. However, other possible causes of a false negative result are user error, medication, and hormone irregularities.
In terms of user error, if a home pregnancy test is used incorrectly it can lead to inaccurate results. Improperly handling the test kit and not following instructions (like not waiting for an adequate amount of time before reading the results) can lead to false negatives. As such, it is important to make sure that you read and understand all testing instructions before proceeding with a pregnancy test.
Medications such as diuretics, antihistamines, and anticonvulsants may affect how your body processes hormones like hCG; therefore these medications can cause incorrect results on a pregnancy test. Additionally, medications that contain corticosteroids or have anti-tumour effects may contain substances called gonadotrophins which could also give inaccurate results when performing a pregnancy test.
Lastly, abnormal levels of hormones in your body compared to normal pregnancies (hyperthyroidism or polycystic ovary syndrome) can also lead to false negatives on an HPT. To help ensure accurate results even with these conditions, some women opt for blood tests which are able to detect even very small amounts of hCG present in lower concentrations than HPT’s do.
Alternative Detection Methods
Although a negative pregnancy test before missing a period is common, there are other ways of detecting pregnancy. Women can track their physical symptoms and changes that may help in determining if they are pregnant. Common signs of pregnancy include fatigue, morning sickness, tender/swollen breasts, frequent urination, dizziness, increased gas/bloating, constipation, mood swings, food cravings and soreness around the stomach area. Other symptoms may not be as obvious but still significant to note such as an increase in basal body temperature or even sensitivities to smells or tastes more than usual. The entire experience of being pregnant will vary for everyone so it’s important to pay attention to any changes that occur throughout the time period.
Effects of Stress
When an individual is awaiting the results of a pregnancy test, there can be an immense amount of stress and anxiety. This can have an effect on the accuracy of an early test, even one that is taken before the missed period. It is possible for symptoms associated with stress to impact hormonal levels, causing them to fluctuate which in turn could affect the concentration of HCG hormone present in urine. Therefore it is important for individuals awaiting their pregnancy test results to take a few deep breaths, relax, and if needed wait until after their missed period if they are worried about inaccurate readings.
Adding Perspectives from Women’s Experiences
False negatives on a pregnancy test can be extremely upsetting, leaving people anxious and full of uncertainty. According to Medical News Today, it is possible to receive a false negative if the test was conducted too early (before the missed period). In this case, any changes to hormone levels won’t yet have been picked up by the tests.
The experience of receiving a false negative before a missed period varies depending on who you are. To better understand the range of feelings such news can bring up, we spoke to five women about their experiences.
The first woman, Lucy*, described feeling ‘emotional devastation’ upon hearing her false negative result. Having planned for a child since just after graduating college, she felt like her dream was slipping away from her. She also discussed how difficult it was for her partner who was grieving alongside her – all while assuming neither had anything wrong with them medically.
The second woman, Sarah*, shared that she had mixed feelings of relief and disappointment when she received her result; relieved because she wasn’t pregnant but still feeling down due to wanted to be and not being able to achieve that goal without medical assistance and intervention.
Saskia* described her experience as “surreal; it was like my heart stopped in place but at the same time I knew there must be something wrong with me and I felt scared of what that might mean”.
Asha* mentioned feeling discouraged and let down after hearing news of false negatives across 3 consecutive months. She said: “It felt like the cruelest joke to keep getting a negative each month when so badly wanting positive results.”
Jane* had no symptoms whatsoever of pregnancy apart from one late period which is why she thought it would be OK if the test came back negative – only for it not produce any answers at all. Jane told us “I was frustrated at this point because I had waited patiently with hope but couldn’t get nothing in return”.
It’s clear from these interviews that receiving news of a false negative on a pregnancy test before your period has been missed is both incredibly distressing and complicated for many women- everyone will have an individual experience based on their own expectations and preconceptions about pregnancy and motherhood in general. Hopefully sharing these stories will remind others currently going through similar situations that they are not alone in their hurt or confusion related to receiving unexpected results from such an important test.

Professional Perspective
From a medical professional perspective, it is common for expecting mothers to take a pregnancy test before they miss their period. This can be done using various tests available over-the-counter or in clinics and hospitals. While this practice has become commonly accepted by many women, it is important to note that these tests are not always 100% accurate and even if the results come back negative, there is still a chance for an unintended pregnancy. It is recommended to speak with an OB-GYN or other healthcare provider if you are concerned about an unintended pregnancy even after receiving a negative test result. Remember that only a doctor’s evaluation and discussion of your individual situation can provide the best advice based on your health and unique needs.
Q&A Section
Q1: How accurate can a pregnancy test be before my missed period?
A1: It is possible to get a reliable result from an at-home pregnancy test as early as six days before your missed period, though it varies from person to person and test to test. If you take a test early, it is important to read the instructions carefully and follow them exactly. Taking tests too soon or using less than the recommended amount of urine could result in inaccurate results. Additionally, it is best to use a high quality test if possible as some cheaper tests may not be as reliable when taken early.
