How Does Identical Twins Happen

Add a section about twins that don’t look identical

Identical twins are formed when one zygote (fertilized egg) splits into two separate embryos. In this case, both babies will share the same genetic material. As such, identical twins, commonly known as monozygotic twins, look extremely similar.

Non-identical or fraternal twins on the other hand, form when two separate eggs are each fertilized by a different sperm cell and develop in the same womb. Although they are called “twins”, fraternal or non-identical twins do not share the same DNA or genetic material. They can be of different genders and may not resemble each other at all.

Since their genetic makeups differ, non-identical twins often don’t look like identical twins even though they come from the same uterus and are born at around the same time. Differences in physical features arise due to environment and varying combinations of gene expression; for instance, in cases where one twin has albinism (or is an albino) and the other does not. Fraternal twins also have a higher likelihood of being dissimilar even if they resemble one another externally—differences in blood types or unique fingerprints indicate that their biological makeups vary significantly.

Include an interactive component

Identical twins happen when one egg is fertilized by one sperm, but then splits into two separate embryos. These identical twin embryos develop with the same genes, look identical to one another, and are of the same sex. Identical twins are not necessarily exactly alike however; they still demonstrate some differences in personality, characteristics and behavior.

If you or someone you know has experience with identical twins, share how the connection between these twins might be different than a pair of fraternal twins. What similarities and differences do you see? Do they exhibit similar interests or behaviors? How is the bond between them unique?

Include additional resources

Identical twins occur when one egg has been released from the ovary and then splits in two, typically around the 12th day after conception. This means that identical twins have the same genetic makeup which is the same as their parents. It is interesting to note that identical twins are not necessarily born at the same time, and may even be conceived days apart due to variations in the rate of splitting of the egg.
