How Does A Negative Pregnancy Test Look?
Pregnancy tests are the go-to way to figure out if you’re expecting a new addition to your family. However, it’s important to understand all components of a pregnancy test, including what a negative pregnancy test looks like.
What Is a Negative Pregnancy Test?
A negative pregnancy test takes place when the hormones, HCG, that result in a positive pregnancy test result are not present in your urine. This typically means the test did not detect enough of the hormone to come up with a positive result.
What Does a Negative Pregnancy Test Look Like?
A negative pregnancy test result is typically indicated by one single line on the indicator strip.
Types of Pregnancy Tests
When it comes to types of pregnancy tests, there are two main kinds:
- Urine tests – Often the most economical and common type of test these require you to urinate on an indicator strip and then wait for a response (either one or two lines).
- Blood tests – These tests take place in a lab and return with lab-certified results, which are more accurate then urine tests. They also measure the amount of hormones present in your blood.
What to Do If You Get a Negative Pregnancy Test Result
First, don’t be too disappointed if you get a negative pregnancy test result. Depending on exactly when you ovulate, it might take a few days after you miss your period for pregnancy to be detected. As such, if your results initially come up negative it may be worth having another test in a couple of days, or making an appointment to have your blood tested at a lab.
When to Consult Your Doctor
If you’ve tested at home a couple of times and received negative results, and you still have not received your expected period, it’s a good idea to speak to your primary care provider or gynecologist. While it’s normal for our cycles to fluctuate from time to time, it can sometimes be a good idea chat to a doctor if you experience overly long or irregular cycles.
Understanding what a negative pregnancy test looks like is an important part of taking a pregnancy test. Thankfully, it’s easy to read the results and know what to do if you receive a negative result.
What do I do if my pregnancy test is negative?
If your pregnancy test is negative, it is likely that you are not pregnant. It is important to take a follow-up test to confirm the result. If the results are still negative, then you may want to consider birth control to prevent an unplanned pregnancy in the future. If your symptoms persist, it is always best to contact your healthcare provider for an evaluation.
