Acetaminophen Safe For Pregnancy
?

Dr. Jen Gunter
There has been a lot of talk lately about whether acetaminophen is safe for pregnant women. A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics suggested a possible link between acetaminophen use in pregnancy and ADHD in children. So is it safe for pregnant women to take acetaminophen?
The short answer is yes. Acetaminophen is considered safe for pregnant women and has been extensively studied. The study mentioned above was observational and did not prove that acetaminophen caused ADHD in children. In fact, the authors themselves stated that “further research is needed to determine whether there is a causal relationship between acetaminophen use in pregnancy and ADHD.”
So why is there so much talk about a potential link between acetaminophen and ADHD? The authors of the study suggest that acetaminophen may interfere with the development of the fetal brain. However, there is no evidence that this is actually the case. It is important to remember that the study was observational and did not prove a link between acetaminophen and ADHD.
So should pregnant women avoid taking acetaminophen?
No. Acetaminophen is considered safe for pregnant women and has been extensively studied. If you are pregnant and need relief from pain or fever, acetaminophen is a good option. However, if you are concerned about the potential link between acetaminophen and ADHD, talk to your doctor.

Is Advil Safe During Pregnancy
?
The active ingredient in Advil, ibuprofen, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs are not recommended for use during pregnancy, as they may increase the risk of miscarriage and other problems. Some research has suggested that ibuprofen may be associated with a higher risk of birth defects, though the results of this research are not definitive. If you are pregnant and need pain relief, talk to your doctor about other options that may be safe for you.
